Sandwich Island Ukulele

Sandwich Isle Ukulele Band meets weekly on Wednesdays at Floridino's Pizza & Pasta Restaurant, 590 N. Alma School Rd. Chandler, AZ 85224 (480) 812-8433 from 6-8 PM. Come early and have dinner as a contribution to the restaurant for free use of the banquet room. Contact Michael Deterding for weekly song list and music at michaeldeterding@cox.net
HISTORY From the start of Lau Kanaka No Hawaii (LKNH) Hawaiian Civic Club of Arizona, members like Auntie ElIie Goldsmith, Al Palmaro, John Bishop and Michael Bonnice among others felt the need to gather regularly to play their ukulele, sing traditional and favorite songs and dance hula. Kumu Uncle Kumalae Matthews often led the group after the club’s general meetings. In 2008, Uncle Henry “Ka’ono’i” Kim established the “The Sandwich Isle Ukulele Band” open to anyone interested in playing with the greater purpose of exposing our community to Hawaiian culture and Aloha spirit. Together with wife Dusty and a group of talented musicians, they played live music while the ukulele strummers played and sang along. Hula dancers joined in as they desired. The Band now led by Michael Deterding has a core of 36 strummers, several hula dancers, soloists and a variety of winter visitors eager to play with us. Regulars and guests, regardless of their playing ability are always welcome to sing, play or just listen. Many have also joined LKNH as the band represents Lau Kanaka at the Arizona Aloha Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Musical Instrument Museum, State libraries and various community centers. There is no charge to join, but new members should have a flash drive to store the sheet music we use at our gatherings. Accompanying music CDs to the sheet music are available for purchase if desired. We meet weekly at Floridino’s Pizza and Pasta restaurant, 590 N. Alma School in Chandler from 6 to 8 PM in the Banquet room. The season runs from September through May.
